26th July 2010

Decided to head back from work earlier today as well.
Stopped by at Ng Siang Hup to buy a Roti John and a can of Wintermelon tea for dinner. Met Daisy and her husband there, so bought 3 Roti Johns and gave them 2. Haha, cos it was RM10 for 3.

Drove back using the Lutong road by the beach.
Right at the speed bump at the "entrance" to the beach, I suddenly felt like pulling over.
So I pulled over. Parked right by the roadside, after the speed bump.
With my Roti John and Wintermelon tea, headed to the beach.

Sat on a weathered old log. Popped open my drink. Drinking and munching on my Roti John.
Watched the waves crash violently against the sand.
Half imagined the clouds roiling like the waves. Blinked. Stillness. Glare. Waves crashing.
A couple, probably in their early twenties, smiling, jogging by.
The platforms and vessels in the distance.
Thought of life offshore. And B.
Thought of my family.
A couple, likely in their forties, sat on a log nearby, eating durians on the beach.
Thought of Genevieve, who loves beaches.
A couple, at least septuagenarians, sandals in hand, gracefully walking hand-in-hand in the shallow water.
Watched the motorbikes driving by on the sand. Then an old Land Cruiser. Even a Kancil.
A small group of young-ish guys on motorbikes, just hanging around.
Thought of the sandflies. Were there sandflies? I wasn't sure..
I'd finished my food. Packed my trash up in the pink Roti John plastic bag.
Looked again at the waves. Contemplated the possible sandflies. Turned to go.
Walking towards my car.
Whistling from the motorbike guys.
Didn't bother turning around. Smacked at my derrière to dust off the sand.
Got into my car and drove back.

Ten years from now, or five, or even five months from now - would I still remember the feelings? The tone of the colours in the sunset? The feel of the fine sand?

The colours of the beach.

Will it be merely a vague sepia-toned memory?
..Or was it already sepia-toned to begin with?
